Special mouse pad ?

Hi,

Recently I picked up an old Unisys mouse which
doesn't use ball, instead it has a couple of led
lamps below. It doesn't work on my table or on a
normal mouse pad, only if I move it on an irregular
shiny surface it moves a bit. Does it need a special
pad and/or drivers also. ?
